So Real … Speaking Out, Reaching Every Adolescent Life is a program aimed at the prevention of teen dating violence.

L Templeton

SO REAL’s Lori Templeton gave a moving presentation to Gate City Civitan Club members, sharing her own story of teen dating violence. Laurie’s story began when she was 13, and continued until she was 22. She catalogued the mental and physical abuse she suffered, including being threatened with knives and guns, and threats made against her friends and family.

Lori’s story is especially chilling for two reasons: First, because this took place in our own community, and second, because her tormentor was himself himself only 15 years old when the abuse began. “I had secret safe rooms at Gate City High School,” Lori said. After the relationship ended, he continued stalking her for nine years - even after she entered college.

Perhaps the most chilling statistic Lori mentioned was that abusive ‘dating’ patterns exist at the 4th and 5th grade level - even before those involved know what ‘going together’ mean. This underscores the fact that abuse is a learned behaviour; SO REAL aims to change that behaviour through awareness and education, and has developed a curriculum for that purpose based on character education, violence prevention, and career development.

SO REAL is a 501(c)3 program based in East Tennessee, and may be reached at 423-292-2240.
